Melancholic Alchemy
By Stephanie Needham

It’s not so much what makes my heart sing,
It’s more about the warm glow I long to feel
as the spark inside me blooms.
I am a woman too often burdened with heavy,
this may be the melancholic star I was born under-
family of origin sent me here.
My heart singing or pure joy –
is not a weave in my soft tissue.
But the call is to know joy.
The wisdom, to be joy
alchemized
from the slow burn
of melancholic ways.

Background story to this poem…

This poem was written by Stephanie Needham who is an IAJW member.  During a recent Writing Alone Together Circle, our writing prompt was: What makes your heart sing?

Stephanie later wrote this poem flowing from the theme of our writing circle.  I loved it and she gave permission for it to be shared here. I hope you are touched by her creative reflections.
